#1 Keywords

The first step

Be found on Google Maps

Your Google Business Profile is your Google Maps location. Ranking higher on Google Maps depends on optimising your profile and regularly updating your information. This includes reviews, photos, blogs and categories.

Pros
  • Appears before Google search results
  • Free and easy to implement
  • Relatively inexpensive
Cons
  • Limited to one location and nearby areas
  • Limited range of keywords
  • Highly competitive
  • Limited search intent (only location)
  • Slow to see changes, Maps is not real-time
Google organic listings

Remember, ChatGPT can’t “see” your Google Business Profile or read a dynamically produced Map. Check this fact with ChatGPT.

The second step

Turn local search into leads

Google Organic Search (the “10 blue links”) is primarily ranked by Google’s web search systems (your website content, links, technical SEO, relevance, etc.).

Just because you have optimised your Google Profile, built citations and can see your company on Google maps, do not expect to rank automatically for your core keywords and your primary location in Google’s Organic search index.

Google’s organic search allows any business, regardless of size or address, to compete for keywords + locations beyond its brick-and-mortar area.

Your GMB location does not mean you cannot appear on Google for other locations. The systems don’t talk in that way.

Pros
  • Allows for unlimited keywords and locations
  • Less competitive
  • Captures customers ready to buy
  • Scalable
Cons
  • Needs an agency to plan and help implement
  • Is more expensive
  • Requires commitment

Your website’s age, backlink profile and SEO strength also play a part.

Does your agency only work in Surrey only or UK-wide?

We work across the whole of the UK, not just Surrey. We have clients in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

How do you measure results?

We measure results in many ways.

  1. Where your keyword + location ranks on Google and AI answers
  2. Your traffic and conversions from local search keywords and pages.
  3. Web conversions and events tracked through Google Analytics.
  4. Your sales data to ensure that website conversions mean real local customers spending money!
What’s the difference between local SEO and national SEO?
  1. Local SEO targets keywords plus a physical location.
  2. National SEO or core keyword SEO targets a keyword regardless of where the user is based.

Both play a part in local search engine optimisation, as new customers will travel if they believe that they will receive a superior service or save money.

Your Google Maps listing is defined by your Google My Business Profile. You have to manually input your location.

The result is that you will only appear for a range of keywords and your actual location. You will also appear in areas near your location.

Organic search results, Google’s main search results, allow your website to appear in towns and cities outside your actual location.

It allows businesses to expand their customer catchment area and ensure their website ranks for a broad range of keywords and locations.

In an ideal word it is best to have both a high Google Map ranking and a list of keywords + location appearing #1 in Google and Gemini.

When it comes to AI, platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity cannot read your Google Map listings, nor can they access your GMB.

This means they are restricted to finding your location via Google search results and other websites that list your site + location.

With the popularity of AI answers growing, this is a huge shift away from Google Maps.

Why do clients focus on Google Maps?

Google Maps is simple to implement and easy to understand. Many clients see local SEO as solely about Google My Business and higher Map rankings.

It is just a case of education. A higher Google Map ranking is good for business, but it is just the beginning.

Many Google searches do not offer Google Maps results at all.

Organic search or local SEO optimisation allows clients to expland their number of keywords + location and the ability to best their local competition in areas further away from their physical location.
